I love living in this apartment building for the most part. The building’s owner (i.e. landlord) is not around much but is reachable by phone. The super lives on site and negates any reason to have to contact the landlord – he is friendly and deals with any concerns promptly. Rent is very cheap for what you get – the apartments are spacious and comfortable. Hot water radiator heating is included in the rent. The building is mostly pretty quiet, but sound carries very easily as the floors are hardwood and the building is old, so there’s not much insulation between apartments, so if your neighbour is noisy, you might find it disturbing. The neighborhood is student-based, so it can be pretty noisy during frosh week, etc – for noise-cushioning, you’re probably better off with an apartment at the back of the building rather than facing the street. There is only one coin-op washer and dryer for 16 units; however, somehow I have rarely had a problem getting the machine when I want it. You’ll see the occasional silverfish, however; you’re probably going to see that with any older building in Halifax. I’ve never seen any evidence of mice or other rodents but feel confident the super would deal with this appropriately if the situation arose. Aside from the noise travelling, I love living here – it’s a small price to pay for a very affordable and spacious apartment in the South End.
